One perk of some accounting jobs on island is getting to travel to some pretty cool places for work. Recently my significant other had a meeting in Turks and Caicos. I have heard of it before but never really pictured it. We spent 3 days there and I could not help comparing it to Cayman.
Turks and Caicos is actually made up of a bunch of small islands but we staying on the main island called Providenciales. Cayman is a lot more built up then Turks and Caicos. With tons of buildings and paved roads Cayman looks quite modern and not too different from say Florida. Turks and Caicos has a lot more open fields between clusters of infrastructure. These open spaces made it feel a bit more wild then Cayman.
Providenciales had a very similar beach to Grand Cayman but it went on for much longer. As opposed to Grand Cayman the beach of Turks and Caicos seems to cover the perimeter of the whole island. Also the beach seemed wider because there are laws in place that prevent buildings from being built too close to the coastline. Cayman does not have similar laws so buildings are built very close to the beach which makes it appear smaller.
We had the opportunity to meet with a friend who works as an accountant in Turks and Caicos and compare expat lifestyles. The population of Providenciales is about 23000 and he estimated only 6% were expats. That is a big contrast to Cayman where half the population are expats. As in Cayman everyone knows each other on Turks and Caicos but an influx of new people do not come in often as in Cayman. In Cayman there is a large influx of new accountants coming in every year. He said dating was almost impossible in such a small place as anyone can probably imagine. Cayman is much more suited to singles then Turks and Caicos.
It was a great break and it was awesome to compare expat lives.

ReplyDeletethank you!!
Hi, I am also from Canada and would like to move to the Cayman Islands. I have been thinking about it for some time now but have no idea how to get started. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)
ReplyDeleteNice place and Beautiful Images Dear... I Like Your Post..... Nice Article.....
ReplyDeleteI agree with this article, I am a Canadian that worked in TCI for 6 years as an accountant, and this author is spot on (as the Brits say :)). I have visited Grand Cayman, and yes it is much more built up, but similar vibe. The 2-3 year itch is there for sure, you end up craving strange things, culture, government services that work, not having to fight for work permits. Enjoy the beach :)
ReplyDeleteHi there....how was it working in TCI...i got an offer to work there as an accountant...do you have an email add where we can exchange emails?...i would love to know more about TCI before i accept the offer...thank you
DeleteThe Cayman Islands are a bit more advanced in a lot of ways than TCI and safer for the most part as it relates to hurricanes and the sort.
