Cayman Island Tourist Tips

I personally have never been a tourist in Cayman but have definitely seen a ton of them. Almost daily we have cruise ships (7 in the busy season). There are also quite a few overnight visitors that you notice shopping in downtown George Town on days when there are no cruise ships.

For Cruise Shippers
  1. Take the bus. There is a bus that goes from downtown George Town to seven mile (this bus seems to come every two minutes in busy season but even in slow season the longest you will have to wait for one is 10 min) The buses here are little vans (although recently I saw an actual bus). All buses have numbers on them and that is what distinguishes them from taxies. The cost is two CI dollars (I am guessing 3US dollars). The best idea would be to turn left when you get off the cruise ship and walk down that road. After about a 5 min walk the buses will start passing by. They will honk at you. Jump on when you see a place you want to get off (recommend after the second set of street lights) just ask the bus driver to stop hand him $2CI per passenger and get off, easy.
  2. You don't have to pay for the beach. There are some places that charge an entrance fee to the beach. What you may not realize is if you walk just a little to the left and through a condo property you can reach the same beach for free.

For Overnighters
  1.  Nothing goes on in George Town once the cruise ships are gone. There have been many times when my fiance and I have been driving to seven mile on a Friday or Saturday night through George Town and we see tourist dressed to the nines walking around looking lost. It is a dead city. Go to seven mile. I have been out of the scene for a little while but I am still pretty sure the scene is Aqua Beach/ Jet. These two bars that are attached.
  2. Do brunch. Want to get a feel of the expat life? Make reservations at Luca or Blue Cilantro for a Sunday Brunch (long weekend Sundays are your best bet). After brunch most of the brunchers go to Royal Palms (is becoming the new place)for after drinks. This is where things get a little wild and fun!

  2. Hi DK,

I am a resident of the Cayman Islands and I would be interested in knowing who is charging for an entrance fee to the beach. Many establishments now are running into issues with not allowing FREE access to the beach that the government in many cases are threatening action because of such.

The comments on transport is spot on. Be aware of taxi cabs who can charge you far beyond a $2 fare for transport all up and won 7 Mile Beach. You can in fact travel all around Grand Cayman by bus is you so wish.

    Come and enjoy our Islands.
