Little Cayman

Last weekend I was lucky enough to go to Little Cayman with a group of people. This is a fairly common activity for expats as it is a short half hour flight and costs around $150US.

What is the attraction of an even smaller island then Grand Cayman??

There is some first class diving out there. Little Cayman is less spoiled by tourism and is full of dive operations. I did not get a chance to dive so I cannot comment too much on that.

The other reason is how isolated Little Cayman is. Even though Grand Cayman is not very busy off season it is still very modern and can sometimes feel crowded. Little Cayman is very wild, with unpaved roads, wild beaches. You can totally relax there!

The main tip for having a good Little Cayman vacation is bring your own everything!!

We brought three big coolers full of food and drinks. We also got 18 bottles of wine! I was so grateful we did. A wine that would normally cost $10 on Grand Cayman actually cost $20 on Little Cayman! A two liter of coke was $5 and sunscreen was $16! A case of beer was $50. These are all CI prices meaning multiply them by 1.2 to get US prices. We ate in for every meal so I cannot comment on any restaurants in cayman.

One of our friends has access to a house and car on Little Cayman so we did not pay for accommodation or transportation. I have had other friends go to little cayman and pay about $250 each for a two night stay. Not sure how much it is to rent a car but do know that you should not lock it! We had one couple rent a car and then lock it and the key got stuck in the door. When the repair guy came he fixed it and told them not to lock it again, haha.

Owen Island is a tiny island you can kayak or even swim to. We rented a few kayaks for those who did not want to swim and for the cooler and headed out to Owen Island. It is definitely worth going out to. Beautiful water and beach.  It is best to go with a group as there is not much to do out there.

About a half an hour drive away is Point of Sand. Another beautiful beach with a lovely dock!

Little Cayman is definitely worth a visit and great for a group getaway from Grand Cayman. Everything is small and quaint. There is even a road going right through the airport!
