Neighborhoods of Grand Cayman - GT, South Sound and East

Here is a break down of the remaining three neighborhoods in Grand Cayman

George Town
Average Price $600-$1600CI ($1.20 US = 1 CI)

There are many different area's that are considered George Town. There are no residential areas in the core of downtown, however, anything from crew road to around the airport is considered George Town. I also consider eastern avenue the George Town Area

I have a few friends that live in the retreats, Coco Retreat, Mystic Retreat, Garden and Sunset. These are nice and usually  modern 1 and 2 bedroom units with mature landscaping. The are located just off Bobby Thompson way. If you can stand living off the ocean then this is a very good deal. They also have pools and gyms.

Besides these units there are a handful of other nice places but usually professionals chose to live in Seven Mile Beach and South Sound. There have also been some reported break ins around crew road.

Pros
  • Short commute to work if you work in GT
  • Reasonable prices
  • public transportation
Cons
  • Not near the ocean
  • Safety can be a concern for single women (this does not apply in the retreats)
  • Not as many expats in these areas (could be considered a pro too)
  • This area can get flooded when there is a lot of rain.
South Sound
Average price $600-$2300

South sounds consist of two main roads, South Church Street and Walkers Road and both of these have very distinct feels. Walkers road is inland and has some very reasonably priced places. South church street is closer to the ocean and you can easily get ocean view. I consider South Sound safer then the George Town area, top right hand corner of the area I outlined excluded.

If you are a single expat needing some place to stay for a short term the South Sound offers some options that are much nicer then Treasure Island. The New Coconut Harbor is one and Compostella is the other. Both are located on South Church Street.

Pros
  • Usually a short commute to work
  • Can bike to work
  • Safe
  • A few of the best restaurants - Grand old house and Sunset house as well as Smiths Cove.
  • Possible ocean view
Cons
  • Pay a premium for a cab ride home on a weekend
  • No public transport
  • If you live far down Walkers road you may have issues with traffic when school is in.
  • No grocery store in the area
East
Average Price $500-$1500 CI

Savannah and Bodden Town are east. Without traffic the commute can be as little as 15 minutes but the biggest draw back is that traffic is usually terrible during rush hour. It could take you as much as 40 minutes to get into town! A lot less expats live out in Savannah and Bodden Town because of the commute to Seven Mile Beach as well. This kind of commute is probably quite short compared to what some people are used to but living here you will quickly get used to very short commute times.

The main draw of this area is that you can get decent prices on ocean view and more square footage.

Pros
  • Affordable prices (found a lot of 2 bedroom houses going for less then 1500)
  • Public transportation for the main streets
  • Relatively safe
Cons
  • Long commute
  • Far from social life hub (SMB)
