Hurricane 101 - Survival Kit

As most of you should know by now I am from Canada. I have watched hurricanes in news casts from USA but that is as close as I have ever been to one. Since moving here I have had a fear of them. During the season, which starts in June and ends in October, I check the national hurricane center website on a regular basis. It is quite scary when you see one heading right for the island! It also does not help when HR drops this off at your desk!

When the season starts there is a lot of talk about being prepared. From my first year I took those words to heart! When I moved I shipped some of my stuff over in big plastic containers so I reserved one of these as my hurricane supply box. Something easily portable as I lived, and still live, right by the ocean. Besides the usual canned foods, cup a soups, flashlights and water I have added things through out the years. Here are a few items that did not make an appearance in my survival kit till later.
  1. Off - I cannot stress this enough! Bugs love me and not having the protection of a house the bugs will make everything a lot more difficult.
  2. Cards - I heard that after a storm there is really nothing to do. No electricity means no Internet or tv, so we have to entertain ourselves somehow.
  3. Toilet paper - obvious but easily forgotten.
  4. Duct-tape - what can't it solve?
  5. Wipes - cleansing wipes as the salt in the ocean is not so nice on the skin.
Also always have heavy duty garbage bags handy as before the storm you might want to pack your stuff in these before you leave your house. Here is the kit! Ironically I had one of my water bottles spring a leak last year and flood my hurricane kit!
