A Bit Of Reflection

I think a bit of reflection is in order. Two years ago I landed on this island not having any idea what was in store for me. I had read a few things and spoke with a few people most of which had a friend of a friend who moved out to Cayman. I was told I would not last more then a year because of how small this place really is.

Now two years later I have come to call this weird little place my home. I have a very good group of friends from all over the world. This group includes Aussies, Americans, Scottish, Irish, Peruvian, South African and Canadian. There is no theater or concert hall here but I think the culture you get from everyone here is amazing.

There have been four marriages of people who have come together to island and one is coming up in June of people who met on island. Every person I knew that was single when first coming to the island is either in a long term relationship or living together. There have been two pregnancies.

Life here like everywhere else moves fast but I am very happy I took the plunge and moved!

I remember when I was moving I went on forums and asked two questions to people who have made the move.
  1. What do you wish you had brought with you or more of?
  2. What do you wish you had not brought or you brought too much of?
One guy said he wished he brought hangers with him (agreed partially) and that he brought too many pairs of jeans.  The latter I totally agree with, I brought 3 pairs of jeans and I wish I only had one. I also wish I had brought less high heels. I don't wear heels on a regular basis but I liked them back in Canada for going out. When you are in a place where everyone goes out in flip flops why don the heels? I actually sent some back to Canada after my first couple of months.

On that note I wish I brought more flip flops - the shoe of choice on island. If you wear them everyday  they will fall apart easily so get lots! Another thing I was glad I brought that no one mentioned was a good garlic press. Seems silly but little things like this can be hard to find here. I have a garlic press and and olive pitter and I have not found anything comparable in the stores here. If you like to cook these are essential!

One final tip to help you not sound like a complete tit when you arrive on the island Conch is pronounced as conck :)

Update April 26th: Today I actually looked at a few of my original posts and I loved the contrast of the keys on my key chain. In this very early post I took a picture
of my one key on my key chain and said it was funny to go from a bundle of keys to just one. Here are my keys today :) Guess no matter where you are the longer you stay the more keys you have!

  1. Amazing tip on the heels - Thank you! We are moving out soon and I'm usually a heels girl when I go out, so I shall definitely be surrendering some now.

    1. No problem! Most bars here have wooden decks and those can be a pain navigating in heels too. If you want the height I recommend wedges hands down. See you on the rock soon :)

    1. Hi Katie,

I went through a recruitment agency, but the agency deals with Financial and IT professionals. I have not heard of a recruitment agency for restaurant staff. My recommendation is to go to http://www.ecaytrade.com/ and see if there are any jobs listed for you.

You could also get a list of restaurants from tripadvisor and email each directly. Finally you could come here on vacation and try to find a job that way. I don't have any connections in that industry so I cannot be of more help.

Thanks for reading my blog :)
