Car Inspection 101

Yearly inspections are required in Cayman to register your car. Every car has a sticker on the bottom passenger side of the windshield with a date on it in big letters. If you let yours expire you can get stopped by the police and pay a 150CI fine. Also when you do finally get your car licensed you have to back pay the licensing.

There are two ways to go about getting your car inspected.

The first is the "legitimate" way. You go to the car licensing place, drive around the building to the inspection docks. There a man will come out and get you to fiddle with all your lights and horn. Then he goes under you car while you turn your wheal then he asked you to drive slowly forward. Finally he asks you to go to the front of the building and he drives your car to meet you. The inspection does not cost anything upfront but once you pass you pay $25CI extra for the inspection when you pay for registration. If you fail you don't pay. This is the cheapest way to do it if you have a car in good running condition.

The other way to get this done is to take it to a certified mechanic. Preferably in West Bay - not being biased but just what I heard.Generally all mechanics will be more lenient with the inspection. Legally mechanics are not allowed to charge extra for the inspection because they are paid by the government for it. Usually you pay a service fee (about $40).

Once you pass inspection you go to the licensing center and pay 185CI for the year. $25 for the inspection and $160 for the registration.
