Private Health Care In Cayman

Even though the Cayman Islands is a British colony they model a lot of their business practices by USA. One example is the health care. I never understood privatized health care until now. I felt really funny today. I was dizzy, my hands were clammy and both my arms were tingly. I freaked out a little bit!

My coworker drove me to the Cayman Clinic. I did not have an appointment so naturally I had to wait a bit. They performed a ton of tests. All kinds of blood tests and an ECG. I have never had an ECG performed and I used to have very bad dizzy spells back in Canada.

In the two hours that I spent there I got almost all my results back. My doctor saw a strange wave on my ECG and called a heart specialist doctor who told her to check my potassium levels. So she called the lab and got the results for that. Also one of the doctors at the clinic is a dive specialist and since I had been diving this weekend my doctor wanted to check with her to see if that may have had something to do with it.

In  the end everything turned out ok. I have health insurance so the $400 worth of tests cost me about $80.

In contrast, I am sure I could have gotten the same tests done in Canada. However I would have had to sit at my doctors for 2 hours. Make a huge fuss, because my doctor would have just waved it away. Then I would have to go to a lab and wait a couple of weeks for my results. No heart or dive specialist would have been consulted.

I have always been for public health care. I do not agree with people dying because they do not have insurance. However, seeing private health care first hand I would have easily paid $80 dollars back in Canada for the same treatment. I feel more at peace with my health!
