Crime In Cayman

Generally speaking Cayman seems like paradise and for the most part it is. Beautiful weather, white sand and very turquoise water. However if you read the local paper everyday you see a different side of Cayman. For the first half of the year there were a lot of robberies. At first they seemed pretty harmless, not one really go hurt and the robbers were armed with machetes. However over the past two months these robberies kept on escalating. First there were shots reported but no one got hurt.

Then an innocent bystander got shot in the face but survived. Then there were carjackings involving guns and stabbings. Now over the past two weeks there were 5 gun related homicides! They all seemed gang related.

It is amazing that such a small population could have so much crime running rampant. I recently heard there were 16 gangs on the island, how can that be?? Are there only a handful of people in each gang?

As an expat, I do not feel unsafe going out. I am getting increasingly concerned because I think it is only a matter of time before something happens on seven mile beach.

The other thing to consider is that there have been 32 homicides in Edmonton this year alone and they were not all gang related. Also I don't think that a business being robbed is reported in the news in Edmonton. If you look at this crime map of Edmonton it is amazing how much happens in a 60 day period in Edmonton that is not reported in the news.  A lot less happens here so every little thing is sensationalized.

  1. Hello,

You have a very interesting blog!

Can you please ellaborate a bit more on that post of yours?

What is you feeling in living there? Does the police do anything more to deal with the increasing criminality?

    Best Regards,
    Dimitris.

  2. Hi,

    Thanks for your comment!

I feel pretty safe where I live. I live in a well lit very busy area so nothing has happened to me so far.

I honestly do not feel the police is doing enough. Since I made this post the criminals have moved on to mugging people in front of their homes! It is incredible. Most of that happens around George Town. One lady was mugged on her way to work at 7 in the morning. That one was close to where I live.

The police increase their presence in high crime areas and then the crime just moves to another area. No one else has been hurt or murdered since I made this post, which is good.

    Thanks,
    D

    1. Hi there,

The crime seems to have gotten a lot better lately. However I have not been checking the news as much so that could account for my view. It really is a safe island, just be smart about it.

I have a blog post where you can message me and then I have your email. I will then email you back so you have mine. I just don't want to have it be fully public :) The blog post with the private messaging is here http://caymanexpat.blogspot.com/2013/04/private-message.html.
